DIY or ask someone nice?
In this seminar, Marina Della Giusta will discuss an experiment to uncover the role of gender and gender stereotyping in relation to the take-up or delegation of volunteering tasks.

As part of the experiment, participants in a volunteering task are given the option of selecting oneself or nominating someone from a group of others to carry out the task. The group is described via cartoons depicting women and men displaying different emotional states: happy, neutral, or unhappy.
Prior to the designation decision some of the participants are subjected to a gender priming treatment, which consists of 12 questions to elicit their degree of sexism.
The experiment reveals both gender stereotyping by men and self-stereotyping by women. It shows a complex interplay between people’s own gender and sexism, and the gender and emotional state of those to whom the task could be delegated.
