Those in a leadership position in schools are at the forefront of supporting vulnerable pupils and their families but unlike most other professionals (speech therapist, educational psychologists and social workers) concerned with the education of pupils, there is no formal tradition of supervision for leadership in schools. This course fills that gap.

Research evidence from other related professions and emerging school-based research has demonstrated the importance and benefits of supervision, including, but not limited to, job satisfaction, professional development and the ability to cope with job-related stress.

The main subject areas covered on this course

This course will:

  • Be both theoretical and practical and spread over two terms to learn current theoretical perspectives behind effective supervision and apply this learning in practise in your setting.
  • Review the different models of supervision and how they might be applied in different contexts.
  • Address practical issues of supervision including frequency and duration, contracts and record keeping.
  • Explore some of the more common supervision problems and dilemmas in education and possible ways forward.

Who can apply for this course?

  • Leaders working in all phases from early years to further education and specialist settings
  • Practitioners with the National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination and two years' post SENCO qualification experience in an education setting
