Kindly note that this short course has been cancelled. The course aims to offer an informed understanding of the nature of deeper mathematical thinking in the primary school and how this could be achieved through practical activities and pedagogical approaches.
Who this course is for
This course is suitable for teachers at all stages of experience including newly qualified teachers (NQTs) and mathematics subject leaders.
Course content
During this session you will:
- reflect on prominent theory concerning deeper mathematical thinking, including some which relates to the current, Mastery agenda
- apply this theory to some transferrable, practical mathematical tasks that offer opportunities for deeper learning
- consider different pedagogical strategies to promote deeper mathematical learning and how these could relate to their own settings
- apply all of the above, through a review of your own work samples, considering how mathematical tasks within your own classes could provide stretch and further mathematical thinking.
Learning outcomes
By completing the course you will have:
- an improved understanding of what is meant by "greater depth" in the current context and how this relates to prominent theory regarding deeper mathematical thinking
- a knowledge of some open-ended, low-threshold, practical activities that could provide opportunities for deeper thinking in primary maths
- an increased awareness of possible, pedagogical approaches that could promote 'depth', both class-based or school-wide
- an increased understanding of how all of the above could be applied in your own settings to promote deeper mathematical thinking in your own pupils.
Course structure
A mixture of teaching on theory around 'depth', presentation and discussion of pedagogical approaches and practical, group-based enquiry completing mathematical activities and reflecting on real-life work samples.
Entry requirements and prerequisites
Participants are asked to bring at least one pupil's maths book with them and any examples of activities that they consider offer pupils a depth of understanding.
Certificates
You will receive a certificate of attendance for completing the course.
Fees
£90 per participant.
