Building on the UCL ScratchMaths project Professor Kalaš and colleagues have subsequently begun designing and developing a systematic teaching/learning process for the four lower primary years.

Using a design research approach they have developed new programming tools (following the existing ScratchMaths 5E pedagogical framework) and also developed an adequate support for teachers.

In this seminar Professor Kalaš will present their new initiative “Computing with Emil”, its broad intention, the result for Year 3, and powerful ideas of computing which pupils will have an opportunity to engage with, as well as some outcomes of the related design research in the area of the levels of control in primary educational programming.

About the Speaker

Ivan Kalaš

is a professor of Informatics education at Comenius University, Bratislava, and since 2013 a visiting professor at UCL Institute of Education, London.

Ivan is a co-author of several programming environments for children, including Imagine Logo, Thomas the Clown and RNA adopted by thousands of schools, in the UK, Brazil, the Netherlands, Slovakia and other countries. From 2014 he was a member of the UCL ScratchMaths project team, designing programming interventions for English pupils aged 9 to 11. Since 2017 he leads a new research and development project focused on systematic development of programming for primary pupils, called Computing with Emil. His professional interests include development of constructionist educational interfaces for programming, and research in the field of the impact of digital technologies on learning.
