I am Head of the Department of Psychology and Human Development, a Reader in Psychology of Education and Co-director, Centre for Education in the Criminal Justice System. I have two core areas of research interest: on the cognitive side, literacy development, both typical and atypical, and the relationship between motivation and literacy; on the mental health side, adolescent development, particularly focusing on internalising disorders/self-harm and externalising disorders/ offending. I have a particular interest in the intersection between behavioural disorders and education.

I teach across several masters programmes in the department, including: 
  • MA/MSc in Child Development, MSc Developmental And Educational Psychology
  • MA/MSc Psychology of Education, MA/MSc Special and Inclusive Education
  • MA Early Years Education, Doctor in Educational Psychology.

I supervise doctoral students in my core areas of interest.

Current research projects include: Long term evaluation of Reading Recovery; Education in prisons; Creative Writing in prisons.

I am an Associate editor for the Journal of Research in Reading.
