Case Studies

Westminster Partnership

The family of an alumni student with dyslexia from Westminster school provided funding for development work on dyslexia.  The SENCO from Westminster school approached the UCL Centre for Inclusive Education (CIE) to discuss a collaborative project.

Six mainstream secondary schools and six Independent secondary schools joined together for a knowledge exchange event.  Two participants from each school was invited, a classroom practitioner and the SENCO for a three-day event which explored research-informed practice with pupils with Dyslexia. NQT training Newham

CIE have supported UCL Centre for Educational Leadership in delivering training to all the primary NQTs in Newham. Tutors taught three separate cohorts of teachers and educational professionals from across Newham. This included teachers starting out on their new teaching careers, whom we made sure were well informed on how to support pupils with SEN and ensure they develop inclusive learning environments.

Lesson Study for Special Educational Needs

CIE is committed to exploring Lesson Study for teachers of pupils with SEN. Dr Amelia Roberts presented a workshop at the London Lesson Study Conference in 2015 and CIE is working with Professor Brahm Norwich to introduce Lesson Study into the NASENCO programme.

Furze Down School and Castlebar Special School are working collaboratively with Dr Amelia Roberts from CIE and Sarah Seleznyov from LLCL on producing case-studies to explore how the Lesson Study approach to joint professional practice can be embedded into Specialist Schools. Both schools are using a framework to structure the process and plan to produce a collaborative paper to showcase their practitioner research.

LA and Schools' Bespoke Projects

CIE is working in partnership with Enfield Local Authority to embed the Code of Practice for SEND into Enfield schools. The project sessions are based on core components of the Code of Practice including The Graduated Response to Need: High Quality Teaching and then linked to the four categories of need. For example for Cognition and Learning, CIE is covering assessment, identification and support for children with literacy and numeracy difficulties and for Social, Emotional and Mental Health, we are covering school-based approaches to supporting vulnerable learners and  Managing Behaviour in PRUs.

Each unit is based on a combination of teaching and 'gap tasks' so that education practitioners can audit their own school practice and explore the impact of strategies in their own setting and report back to their colleagues on the course.

CIE presented keynote lectures at the Westminster Education Forum, Swindon, Wiltshire and Newham Local Authority annual SEN Conferences.

CIE recently enjoyed working with a specialist dyslexia junior school providing 5 days consultancy to support the school in opening its doors to KS1 and 3 learners and helping the school to develop the school vision, polices, teaching and learning provision; as well as supporting preparation for OFSTED. The Head Teacher described the support as 'inspirational'.

We've also been working in collaboration with a number of schools here, including Castlebar Special School and St. Peter's School in Croydon. CIE designed a bespoke Autism training followed by termly Professional Learning Networks to consolidate practice in supporting children with Autism. For Castlebar, we ran a four-part induction for SENCOs plus the full NASENCO accredited award in partnership with the Teaching School Alliance.
