Mathematics Education Group
Promoting research-informed teaching practice in the field of mathematics education and supporting the development of young researchers, from early years to university level.
The Mathematics Education Group (MEG) is one of the largest groups of mathematics education researchers in the UK.
We are interested in exploring the processes involved in the teaching and learning of mathematics, developing, evaluating and enhancing pedagogical practices, in an effort to broaden and enrich the mathematics education research field and promote research informed practices.

Every member in the MEG is involved in a variety of research topics that explore the teaching and learning of mathematics and analyse pedagogical practice aimed at enriching the mathematics teaching and learning.
We are also involved in teaching, such as the Initial Teacher Education programmes and Master’s courses and modules across IOE, running Continuous Professional Development sessions for mathematics teachers and promoting research informed practice.
Part of our mission is to offer high quality teaching, while providing high-quality student support, but also develop our postgraduate students’ research skills in the field of mathematics education.
Our Special Interest Group (SIG) for Mathematics Education is a forum to support those engaged in research, teacher education and curricular design within the field of mathematics education.
Our main activities are:
- Research seminars: Led by academics from around the UK and beyond, these sessions discuss recent developments in Mathematics Education Research and all are welcome to attend.
- Current issues: These discussions are facilitated by members of the UCL Team and address current issues in Mathematics Education such as policy changes reports or consultations that have the potential to impact on the field. These are open to all our staff and postgraduate researchers.
- Researcher development: Also open to UCL staff and post-graduate research students. These include work-in-progress meetings and also more explicit ‘training’ events, such as the one where colleagues can learn from the knowledge and expertise within the group. They aim to provide a supportive environment in which to develop research, teaching and other projects in mathematics education from initial ideas right through to publication.
- Staff and curriculum development: These meetings are for IoE Mathematics Education staff only. The SiG time-slot is a convenient time for staff to come together to support each other and discuss curriculum planning and administrative matters. These meetings mainly occur at the start and end of term.
Most group members are based at IOE. But academics and research students working in the field of Mathematics Education, from anywhere in the world, can join. Membership is free and there is no joining procedure. Just turn up to our events (click on link to the SiG page), when you can.
