BiLingo is a UK, UCL-based Education and Information Service. We aim to provide the most up-to-date research-based advice, information, support and advice on childhood bilingualism/multilingualism and learning English as an Additional Language (EAL).
What we offer
We offer research-based advice and information on learning two or more languages in childhood, including EAL learners, to:
- Parents: advice, information, seminars, workshops, Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) coffee mornings and meetings.
- Teachers: seminars, short workshops and Inset day training sessions for teachers and teaching assistants in mainstream, international and complementary (community language) schools, and teachers of English as an Additional Language.
- Speech and Language Therapists: short seminars/workshops.
- Non-profit Organisations and Community groups interested in bilingualism/multilingualism: advice/information seminars, workshops.
We are living in the most linguistically diverse city in the world
The latest official figures in London only, reveal that more than 300 languages are spoken in London’s schools, offering new cultural perspectives and linguistic richness to all pupils.
A plethora of bilingual/multilingual children growing up, attend Complementary Schools (Community Language Schools) on Saturdays/evenings to maintain their home language(s) in addition to their mainstream schooling - depended upon provision in their mainstream school, they follow a programme of initiation as an EAL Learner.
Strengths in the classroom and society
We aim to celebrate early bilingualism and multilingualism in all languages and dialects, nurturing understanding of the strengths that this type of learner holds and the strengths brought in the classroom and more importantly in the society.
Outreach events - We have held many events and met many teachers and parents across London. It has been really interesting to share experiences of raising bilingual and multilingual children.
Resources - Bilingual books and websites for parents, schools and practitioners.
About us - We are a group of UCL-based researchers working in different areas of childhood bilingualism/multilingualism.
