A number of doctoral researchers studying within IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society, have been awarded prizes this autumn which recognise the excellence of their research in a wide range of educational specialisms, from languages and sociology to issues facing teachers.

On UNESCO’s International Mother Language Day 2024, which celebrates learners’ universal right to study their heritage languages, Professor Li Wei, Chair in Applied Linguistics and Director and Dean of IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society, writes:

Congratulations to three of our PhD students who have been awarded the prizes to support their doctoral research on second language education.

International university students’ scores on the Duolingo English Test (DET) can predict students’ academic performance in their first year of university, finds a study led by Dr Talia Isaacs at IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society.

Former student Page Wheeler has published a paper in one of the best known and highly regarded modern-language journals in the world, based on her MA dissertation at IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society.

IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society, has been named Number 1 for Education in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for the ninth year in a row.

Former student Yujie Shao has published a paper in the international journal TESOL Quarterly, based on his assignment work when studying on the TESOL In-Service MA at IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society.

One of the first blue plaques for an applied linguist in the UK has been unveiled by Professor Zhu Hua (IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society) noting the birthplace of Pit Corder.
