About the centre
Director: Dr David Mallows
Our centre provides support for IOE students in the form of workshops, webinars, one-to-one tutorials, writing retreats and online resources. Our sessions and resources are specifically designed to support academic writing in Education and related disciplines.
We support both home and international students, and also offer pre-sessional support to students who have yet to commence their study at the Institute.

Academic Writing Seminar Series
An annual schedule of webinars in which speakers present research and innovations in practice, and reflect on personal and institutional experiences of academic writing.

Preparation for Academic Studies in Higher Education (PASHE)
The summer course Preparation for Academic Studies in Higher Education (PASHE) is designed for IOE students intending to take undergraduate or postgraduate courses in Education or related disciplines.

Resources for academic reading and writing
Open and self-access resources from the IOE Academic Writing Centre to help you improve your academic reading and writing.
Study with us
We run workshops, webinars, tutorials and writing retreats throughout the year, including during evenings and Saturdays, to help you with specific aspects of your writing:
- Webinars to support your academic writing development.
- One-to-one tutorials during which you can discuss aspects of your writing with an Academic Writing Centre Lecturer. One-to-one tutorials take place online via Microsoft Teams and last 45 minutes.
- Writing days: One-day writing days are scheduled throughout the academic year and summer. They provide a structured space in which you can complete your writing in a supportive and encouraging atmosphere, sharing writing challenges and progress with peers. We offer both face-to-face and online writing days.

Sign me upThe Academic Writing Centre made a huge difference to my experience studying at IOE. Their classes really helped me develop my writing and I improved my ability to understand and critique my reading. I feel like I got more out of it as a result. They were one of the best parts of my whole MA.
