WEISS team wins prize for Best Stand at UCLH Research Open Day

12 July 2018

On 5 July 2018, a team of WEISS researchers participated in UCLH Research Open Day to showcase the cutting-edge research and innovation taking place at UCL and UCLH and to celebrate the 70th birthday of the NHS.

WEISS team wins prize for Best Stand

Our efforts demonstrating the pioneering new research coming out of WEISS earned us first prize for 'Best Stand'.

Our winning team at UCLH Research Open Day

This year was the fifth annual Research Open Day and one of its busiest yet, with hundreds of attendees visiting over 40 interactive research demonstrations over three floors of the hospital. It gave members of the public a chance to talk to clinicians and scientists about how they are working to improve healthcare at UCLH and across the UK.

There was a particular focus on the last 70 years of NHS progress in research, allowing visitors to explore how research has advanced and innovated over the decades.

At the event, we had two connected, interactive exhibition stands at the entrance to the hospital. One showcased SmartLiver technology that has been developed to aid visualisation during abdominal surgery. We demonstrated active research taking place to create more accurate and more visual maps of critical structures overlaid over the existing information available to surgeons, including augmented reality, visual alignment and discussed their application to cutting-edge technology such as the DaVinci surgical robotics.

The other stall highlighted augmented reality for surgical guidance. It had demonstrations on Eulerian Video Magnification technology which reveals subtle motion in videos that are impossible or very difficult to see with the naked eye. This technology is being developed for use in surgery to amplify small movements and display them in a way that makes them more easily visible.

We would like to thank all our researchers that helped put together such engaging and thought-provoking demonstrations, with a special mention to Public Engagement Co-ordinator, Dan Taylor.

Throughout the week we were also involved in a host of other exciting opportunities to celebrate the NHS' birthday, including an #Innovate2Translate campaign led by the UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering which highlighted the importance of continuing to innovate within the NHS to maximise clinical impact.
