Professor/Director of the Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences Ref:1796205
Overview, duties & requirements
University College London (UCL), the Wellcome Trust, and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) invite applications for the post of Professor/Director of the major interdisciplinary centre based at UCL: the Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS). The Centre combines the strengths of UCL engineering and clinical sciences to ensure that innovative engineering solutions are reaching the clinic to the benefit of patients.
WEISS operates under a hub and spoke model with teams based in multiple locations in order to promote close cooperation between the engineering and clinical teams. The centrepiece is the recently refurbished Charles Bell House. The Centre has a broad remit with research teams addressing a wide range of clinical applications: gastro-intestinal, vascular, pediatric, ophthalmic, neurological, and prostate. The corresponding engineering expertise includes intraoperative imaging and sensing, machine learning, data fusion and extraction, human-machine interfaces, tissue modelling, instrumentation, and surgical navigation.
The Centre is tasked with conducting world-leading translational research and is seen as being in the vanguard for such ability. It benefits from significant institutional support and an unparalleled level of cooperation between the engineering and clinical leads in partnership with industry.
The post of Professor/Director carries with it a professorial title and the post holder will play a significant role in the strategic development of translational engineering in support of biomedical engineering at UCL. The Professor/Director will be responsible for recruiting and nurturing outstanding research groups; and for promoting links between the Centre, UCL, and the wider scientific community. Substantial and long-term resources are and will be available to support the scientific work of the Professor/Director and other researchers in the Centre. The appointment is available immediately.
The successful applicant will be of international standing and have a world-leading track record in the translation of research. Experience in running a comparable research centre or significant research programme(s), scientific management and/or strategic planning is highly desired and will receive preferential review.
Appointment at Grade 10, competitive salary plus benefits.
