Russell Hobby, general secretary for the National Association of Head Teachers, described Reading Recovery as the single most important scheme in helping primary schools to tackle the reading problems of slow learners (The Independent, 2011).

Is every child a reader by the end of Key Stage 1 in your school? If not, then Reading Recovery is the affordable way to deliver the best results for children who need to catch up in literacy. Reading Recovery is the only programme for six year olds who are significantly behind in reading and writing. Research shows that no other approach achieves such good results so swiftly and so long lasting.

The Initial Professional Development course for Reading Recovery teachers is a comprehensive package which provides a depth and range of knowledge and skill to enable your teacher to teach any child to read and write. Through sharing their expertise, your teacher can help improve practice and standards across the school. The course offers excellent value for money and is internationally recognised, accredited by the UCL Institute of Education and delivered locally.

What can a Reading Recovery teacher offer your school?
Your Reading Recovery teacher will:

  • become an expert in theories and practice of literacy learning and literacy difficulties
  • become an expert in teaching the lowest attaining literacy learners
  • develop superb observation and assessment skills, and hone their professional judgement about teaching and learning interactions
  • develop systems for collecting, analysing and reporting evidence of the impact of intervention on children's learning
  • contribute to school improvement by ensuring that all children reach the end of Key Stage 1 as proficient readers and writers
  • learn how to use action research to help your leadership team identify and address the literacy priorities and needs of your school
  • work with your leadership team to identify, evaluate and implement the most appropriate interventions for your children, in a streamlined approach to raising attainment for all
  • provide in-house professional development for all those involved in early literacy teaching in your school
  • enhance the potential of support staff through mentoring and training.
