How do bio-scientists help medical professionals look inside the body?

Latha Srinivasan, Consultant Neonatologist at UCLH
Abstract

Medical Imaging enables visual representation of the anatomy (structure) and physiology (function) of the body. An amazing 41.3 million imaging tests are performed in the UK every year. These tests play an essential role in diagnosis, treatment and monitoring progression of diseases for both medical professionals and patients. Furthermore, in research imaging is used as a biomarker for interventions which affect health and disease.

Visual analysis of images is subjective whereas image analysis technology allows digital information to be processed in an objective manner and can extract information on more than signal intensity. In this seminar we will look at a few imaging techniques used in fetal and neonatal imaging and explore how engineering solutions can be used to define structural and functional aspects of the developing brain.
