Global Consortium for Re-thinking Capitalism (GCRC)

UCL CCS are proud to lead the GCRC, an ambitious international platform dedicated to reimagining the role of finance, markets, and economic governance in the face of converging global crises.

The Global Consortium for Re-thinking Capitalism (GCRC) brings together leading centres of critical research across four continents, with partners in New York, Buenos Aires, Santiago, Canberra, Cologne, Cambridge, and Hamburg. At a time of deepening planetary instability, rising inequality, and democratic erosion, the need for new ideas, new institutions, and new collaborations is more urgent than ever. GCRC is built to meet this challenge: not simply a partnership of elite institutions, but a platform for confronting capitalism’s entanglements with ecological breakdown, authoritarian politics, and the lived realities of everyday finance.

Launched in collaboration with our key co-leading partner, the Heilbroner Center for Capitalism Studies at The New School, the Consortium is united by the conviction that financial systems—long implicated in extraction and exclusion—must be reimagined as instruments of democratic accountability, social security, and planetary survival.

The consortium supports bilateral learning agreements—already in place with research centres in Chile and Argentina—and is expanding toward deeper partnerships in Southeast Asia and other regions. We are especially committed to amplifying voices from the Global South and engaging with grassroots financial practices too often overlooked by mainstream economics.
