Introducing... Dr Mallika Sekhar

Dr Mallika Sekhar is an IAS Visiting Research Fellow from 1 September 2024 to 31 March 2025.
Dr Mallika Sekhar, MBBS, MD, FRCP, FRCPath, is a Consultant Haematologist at the Royal Free Hospital and an Honorary Associate Professor of Haematology at UCL Medical School. A medical graduate of the University of Bombay, she trained in Haematology in India, UK and USA and was appointed as Consultant Haematologist in 1995. She specialises in Chronic cancers of the bone marrow and in Transfusion Medicine. Mallika developed an exemplar service for patients with myeloproliferative cancers and abdominal vein thrombosis and established a UK registry for this rare condition. She has held public office and contributed to national policies on blood safety.
She has research interests in medical error and published a podcast series, ‘The Bitter Pill’, in 2022 (https://thebitterpillpodcasts.libsyn.com/). She is a 2021 alumnus of Harvard University where she trained in the Media and Medicine program. She served as an expert panel member of the UK Infected Blood Inquiry and is now engaged in a cross disciplinary examination of the Inquiry's report to better understand the scope of the lessons to be learnt from it.
