The Centre for Modern and Contemporary Britain (CMCB) is looking for a new co- director, to work alongside Prof Tom Woodin

CMCB seeks to build a vibrant and connected space for intellectual community and exchange that creates new synergies and productive working relationships across UCL and beyond. It enables students and scholars of modern and contemporary Britain to engage with each other’s work across traditional disciplinary boundaries, bringing the arts and sciences, theorists and practitioners, into productive conversation.

The co-directors are responsible for the management and overseeing of all Centre activities, with the assistance of the IAS Research Centre Coordinator, Lucy Stagg. There is no job description as such; it is largely up to the centre director to make of it what they wish. However, responsibilities could include forming and chairing a steering group of interested colleagues, convening the CMCB's annual events programme; overseeing the CMCB web pages; liaising with staff and students affiliated to CMCB, including convening planning meetings; fostering and promoting doctoral research in modern and contemporary Britain, and related fields. The directorship is normally held for three years.

Although there is no financial remuneration for the position, it would suit a middle career academic looking to expand their networks, both intellectual and personal, show research leadership and build a portfolio for promotion. Academics from all stages of their careers are welcome to apply. Any teaching release or other workload adjustment associated with the role would need to be negotiated with the department and faculty concerned.

If you wish to put yourself forward for the position of CMCB Co-Director, tenable immediately, please email lucy.stagg@ucl.ac.uk Please include a link to your staff page and a short statement explaining your interest in the centre and your ideas for CMCB going forward (200 words max). The deadline for expressions of interest is 18th November 2024.
