ARIEL Moving Image Research Event: The Critical Cinema Camera

This one day practice as research event aims to explore the technical capabilities and the critical and creative research potentials of our new 'industry standard' camera. The ARRI Alexa Xtreme has been funded by RCIF budget from A&H, SHS and IOE Faculties, and is a resource that is available to colleagues across UCL. All are welcome to join this event, and beyond this session, to make proposals to use the camera.

Programme for the day

Morning

• A technical overview training introducing the capabilities of the ARRI Alexa Xtreme. Delivered by the training team from CVP.

Afternoon 

• Guest presentation from Alex Nevill, cinematographer, director and researcher, University of Edinburgh www.alexnevill.com. Nevill's recent book, Towards a Philosophy of Cinematography advances a new perspective on the discipline, moving from the notion of light as vision to light as material, from technology as a tool to technology as a network, and from cinematography as an industry to cinematography as a collaborative art.
• Workshop discussion sharing practice and exploring the possibilities (and restrictions) of working with an industry standard camera in creative practice research. All participants are invited to contribute a short 3 minute sharing of their current moving image/ film research (via screening or oral presentation).
