Article - Read in Advance

We will be discussing Shruti Kapila’s article ‘Masculinity and Madness: Princely Personhood and Colonial Sciences of the Mind in Western India 1871-1940’, Past & Present (2005), https://www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/3600708.pdf - please read the article in advance.

Our fabulous colleague at UCL, Zara Ismail, will be leading the discussion. She has kindly suggested the following questions to guide our reading:
1.    Who is allowed to speak, who is heard, and by whom?
2.    What role does gender play in colonial ascriptions of 'illness' in the case of Shivaji and Faiz Mohammad?

This reading group is run by UCL PhD students Finn Manders (Wellcome collaborative doctoral student) & Katherine Wills.

Open to PhD students, ECRs and other interested historical researchers. For information on upcoming sessions, dates, and reading material, please join the mailing list http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/HEALTHBODYREADINGWELLCOME.
