Could Palestine's Nelson Mandela finally be freed, and unify the struggle for Palestinian liberation?
Imprisoned by Israel for 23 years after an unfair trial for terrorism, the world outside Palestine has often forgotten Marwan Barghouthi - the 'Nelson Mandela of Palestine'. A leader of the First and Second Intifadas, second in command to Arafat, Marwan is an academic, a parliamentarian, and a fierce advocate of democracy, women's rights, and international law. He still overwhelmingly polls as a unifying leader for the Palestinian people. This film is Marwan's story - and a vision for Palestine's future...
The award-winning documentary brings Marwan’s life – his activism, his imprisonment, and his humanity – to all those immersing themselves with the Palestinian liberation movement amidst Israel’s genocide, and rediscovering the enduring significance of Marwan as a politician and as a symbol of hope.
The screening at 6pm will be followed by a conversation between Arab Barghouthi, activist and son of Marwan, and Professor Gargi Bhattacharyya, Director of the Sarah Parker Remond Centre at UCL, and an audience Q&A. This event is kindly co-hosted by the Anti-Genocide University and the Sarah Parker Remond Centre, at the UCL East Campus Cinema.
