Systems and Representations — Culture and Ecology from the South

This interdisciplinary reading group explores the relationship between society, politics, economics, and the environment in Latin America and the global South from a sociocultural perspective.

Our group engages with foundational and recent scholarship, as well as cultural materials, such as media, films, and photographs, discussing the historical, environmental, and political dimensions of capitalism, resource extraction, and the commodification of the natural and built environment while shedding light on its impact on cultural identities, power dynamics, and ecological systems. The group welcomes students, researchers, and scholars interested in these topics from the Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM, and Natural Sciences.
Sessions will be held online on Thursdays at 5:00 PM (GMT) unless otherwise specified by the conveners. Each term, the Reading Group will focus on a specific theme, with “extractivism” as the theme for spring 2025. Readings and materials will be shared in a common folder.
