In his groundbreaking book On Cuddling: Loved to Death in the Racial Embrace (Pluto Press, 2023) Phanuel Antwi offers a profound and rare case of reimagining intimacy in the “continuous present” of racial violence. A singular combination of poetry and prose, convocation and critique, On Cuddling asks us to grapple with the terrifying embrace of the slave ship's hold, the racist encoding of 'cuddly’ toys and the crushing weight of police terror. Yet it also awakens us to the queer graces of solidarity and the warm folds of language in a time when we need both more than ever.

At this gathering, Phanuel Antwi will read from and discuss On Cuddling, in dialogue with Max Haiven, the editor of the VAGABONDS series of which the book is a part. Haiven is a Senior Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies and Canada Research Chair in the Radical Imagination at Lakehead University.

This event is supported by the Institute of Advanced Studies, RiVAL: The ReImagining Value Action Lab, and Pluto Press.
