We will touch upon the role of the editor and what it means to edit a publication. The focus of the session, however, will be on editing a piece of writing - what does it take to make it publishable? How do you give a piece of writing the necessary clarity to convey your message and to (potentially) reach a wider non-expert audience? We will look at format, structure, flow, language, voice (the author's, the publication's, the editor's) and discuss the often overlooked, albeit crucial, role of communication in the process of editing.
Please bring along a piece of writing (1-2 pages maximum) that is in its early stage and needs editing. Feel free to bring a piece that you struggle with. We will discuss one or two pieces together before we edit each other's writing.
The workshop is open to all, irrespective of experience and will be led by Marthe Lisson, Editor of the IAS review Think Pieces and the Institute's Communications Officer.
To register, please write to Marthe marthe.lisson@ucl.ac.uk.
