Join us for a tour of PEARL, UCL's Person-Environment-Activity Research Laboratory in Dagenham, and find out about this unique facility to explore the ways in which people interact with their environment.

This tour will show you PEARL’s working environment – we will walk you through its malleable laboratory space where lighting, sound, smell and physical features can be controlled for real-scale testing with people. You will find out what helps us to make this happen, with: our well-equipped workshop, to manufacture items for use in the experiments as well as innovative prototypes; our studio, where smaller items and models can be made; as well as our dedicated sound studio for the analysis and composition of spatialised soundscapes. Finally, we will walk you through our unique malleable working environment for all staff that can be easily adjusted to suit different needs at different times.

About Pearl

PEARL (Person-Environment-Activity Research Laboratory) is a unique facility to explore the ways in which people interact with their environment. It is a massive space in which we can create life-sized environments under controlled conditions, so that we can examine how people interact with their environments. We can manipulate the ground, simulate different lighting conditions, create soundscapes and concoct smells. We aim to create a world in which people and the environment can thrive together in a mutually beneficial, safe, equitable and healthy way. We challenge all frontiers and our endeavour is driven by the exploration of new ideas which contribute to the creation of a better world.

PEARL is for everyone: Cities, Communities, Educators, Researchers, Governments and Industries. We connect a diverse range of sectors, from Health to the Creative Arts, and collaborate with a wide range of partners, both in the UK and abroad.”
