The Presocratic philosophers invented new ways of thinking about the natural world, human life, and the structure of reality. In doing so, they also conceived new ways of speaking about the world: new ways of using language and novel forms of expression. This book-in-progress examines these two innovations and the productive relation between them. Through close readings of the fragments of Parmenides, Heraclitus, Empedocles, Anaxagoras and Democritus, it aims to show that the poetics of these early philosophers not only conveys their thought but enables and shapes it.
