The book explores cultural memory dynamics in cities in east-central Europe that experienced dramatic population shifts as a result of the redrawing of borders, forced resettlement and mass murder during and after World War II. Focusing on cities that experienced these phenomena particularly acutely, such as L’viv, Wrocław or Kaliningrad, and looking at a broad range of phenomena, from literature and film to museums and memory politics, the book traces the processes by which the pre-war pasts of these cities were initially neglected or deliberately erased, but then later embraced as an inherent part of local memory and identity.
