This event brings together two leading historians to discuss their recently published books on the intertwined histories of Israel, Palestine, and the United States. Drawing on transnational approaches that bring together political, cultural, social and intellectual histories of the Middle East and the US in the twentieth century, the speakers will discuss the American role in facilitating Israel's occupation as well as the persistence of Palestinian statelessness. Why have Americans continuously showed Israel preferential treatment? How did Palestinians and Israelis try to shape these historical processes, and to what degree of success? To what extent have the patterns of the late twentieth century informed contemporary relations? By examining longer historical trajectories across the US and the Middle East, this conversation will offer insights into the crafting of international history and the course of regional conflict today.
