For fifty years, Irena Klepfisz has written powerful, searching poems about relatives murdered during the war, recent immigrants, a lost Yiddish writer, a Palestinian boy in Gaza, and various people in her life. A trailblazing lesbian poet, child Holocaust survivor, and political activist whose work is deeply informed by socialist values, Klepfisz is an individual American voice.
This talk aims at critical analysis of the corpus of Irena Klepfisz’s work, contextualizing it as a reflection of contemporary Jewish secular identity, with a specific focus on her roles as a feminist, activist, and inheritor of the Bundist tradition. Klepfisz’s work has three primary components: post-Holocaust strategies, emotional strategies of historical reclamation, and political strategies of feminist and lesbian engagement.
Central to Klepfisz’s approach is a reconnection with pre-war Jewish traditions, a skilful reconfiguration of traumatic memories, and a quest for a sense of belonging within the realm of women's liberation movements. Her work seeks to amplify the visibility of lesbian identities within the Jewish societal context.
The speaker posits that Kelpfish’s contributions significantly enrich our comprehension of post-war identities. By delving into these varied dimensions of contemporary Jewish secular identity through her writings, Klepfisz provides invaluable insights into the intricate and nuanced nature of identities that emerged in the aftermath of World War II.
