It has become increasingly apparent in recent decades that one of the major driving forces of contemporary anti-Zionism and of the "new antisemitism" directed at Israel, comes predominantly from the Left of today's political spectrum. In this ground-breaking lecture, Professor Robert Wistrich will demonstrate that this contemporary trend has deep historical roots in the cultural and ideological DNA of modern Socialism ever since its beginnings in the 1840s.

This lecture will explore in depth the mutations in leftwing attitudes to Jews, Judaism, Zionism and the State of Israel in order to explain how we have arrived at the present impasse. The lecture will seek to show the fatal flaws that underlie so much of leftwing thinking on Jewish issues as well as analyzing the complex psychology of the Jewish relationship to Socialism and Communism.

Professor Robert S. Wistrich holds the Neuberger Chair of Modern European and Jewish History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Since 2002  he has also headed the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism on Mount Scopus. He is the author and editor of more than 25 books, including 'A Lethal Obsession: Antisemitism from Antiquity to the Global Jihad' (2010) which has been hailed by many commentators as the definitive work on the subject for years to come. His newest book entitled 'From Ambivalence to Betrayal. The Left, the Jews and Israel', was published in 2012 and has received some outstanding reviews.
