From the middle of the 19th century a burgeoning cultural industry developed in Europe and North America: publishers, a music industry, the theatre, and, in the early 20th century, the film industry. Jews had a significant role in these developments. The lecture seeks to establish the extent of their contribution and the causes behind it.

Donald Sassoon is Emeritus Professor of Comparative European History, Queen Mary University. He was born in Cairo, educated in France, Italy, England (first degree at UCL, PhD at Birkbeck under the supervision of Eric Hobsbawm), and the USA (MA from Penn State). He is the author of over 100 articles and a number of books, including 'One Hundred Years of Socialism' (1000 pages), 'Mona Lisa', and 'The Culture of the Europeans' (1600 pages). His books have been translated in fifteen languages. He has lectured in some thirty countries. He is the curator of 'La Storia in Piazza', in Genoa, a festival of history that attracts 25,000 people.
