| Code notes | (applies to part of 1st decade & part of second only): Applies to MLCAA1IM, MLCAT1IM, MLC41DIM and DUR1DIM. Alpha codes comprising A, B, C, M, Z, or Space indicating the position on the death draft of the immediately-following multiple cause code '(' = the immediately-following multiple cause code provides additional information about the previous multiple cause code 'M' = the immediately-following multiple cause code is a Morphology code for the previous multiple cause code (applies to 1979 - 1982 registrations) 'A' = the immediately-following multiple cause code is taken from line Ia of the death draft 'B' = the immediately-following multiple cause code is taken from line Ib of the death draft 'C' = the immediately-following multiple cause code is taken from line Ic of the death draft 'Z' = the immediately-following multiple cause code is taken from line II of the death draft Space = alpha code taken to be the same as that of the previous multiple cause code Note: 1 'A' is always the first prefix 2 'A', 'B', 'C' and 'Z' prefixes appear only once and in the order shown, although they need not all be present 3 For 1979-1982 registrations 'M' prefixes can appear any number of times per record but must be immediately preceded by a code with a prefix other than 'M'; two 'M' prefixes cannot be together 4 Space and '(' prefixes can appear any number of times after one of the alpha prefixes e.g. A,space,(,(, B, M,space 5 For 1979-1982 registrations the code immediately prior to an 'M' prefix will be a Chapter 2 cancer code (ICD 1400-2394). Although an 'M' code always requires a preceding cancer code, a cancer code does not always require a following 'M' code.
