descriptiongeneral | The 1970 Classification of Occupations groups jobs according to the kind of work done and the nature of the operation performed (1970: vi) . It is broadly comparable with the 2-digit level of the International Classification of Occupations 1968. The Classification comprises unit groups, which are grouped into larger groups, called orders, which, like the unit groups, have certain broad features of occupations in common. |

descriptionls | For historical reasons, ONS uses two different versions of occupation and employment status. One is used in census processing and the other for the collection of event information (births, cancers, deaths) statistics.
1971 LS variables are coded to the 1970 Classification of Occupations.
The LS 'census' occupational unit group (OCCC7) takes values in the range 001-223, for those who were employed, off work sick, retired or intending to work. The 'statistics' version (OCCS7) has additional categories to distinguish between full-time students, those with independent means, the permanently sick and housewives, as follows:
230 = Full-time student
231 = Independent means
232 = Permanently sick
777 = Housewife
The 'census' occupational order is held in the LS as a separate variable (OCCO7) .
In 1971 the school leaving age was 15 so this was the lower age limit for questions on employment at the 1971 Census. |
