TRACE91: TRACING HISTORY INDICATOR DESCRIPTIONS: 1991 CENSUS

The development of the Tracing History Indicators (THI) began during the 1981 Census Link exercise when it became important to define subsets of the data so that linkage between the 1971 and 1981 Censuses could be made easier. The THIs also offered a way of defining stable samples for research using populations of LS members who had known study histories from 1971 to 1981 and were traced at NHSCR.

In each Census-LS Link exercise (1981 or 1991) index cards are prepared containing information about LS persons sampled from that years census. These are compared with the LS index, approximately 700,000 members, already held at NHSCR, Southport. Tracing History Indicators are assigned on the basis of this link exercise.

The Tracing History Indicator represents a combination of:

Eighteen, two digit, codes were developed to define all the subset types up to and including the 1981 Census.

The terms used in describing the subsets can be explained as:

Matched
- means we have tracked down an existing card in the LS Index which corresponds with one prepared for a LS member sampled from a census.
Traced
- means we have identified an NHS number for the LS member.
No Trace
- means that we have not been able to identify an NHS number for an individual.
First Decade
- refers to the period of time between the 1971 and 1981 Census.
Second Decade
- refers to the period of time between the 1981 and 1991 Census.

(NHS numbers are supplied ie traced with birth, death, immigration or emigration event notifications.)

At the time of the 1991 Census a further set of THIs were created to describe the history of LS members from the 1981 to the 1991 Census. Twenty two codes were defined to cover the subset types between 1981 and 1991 together with four codes for missing or suspect data.

To assist users in data analysis a positional Tracing History code breakdown has been created, where the first two digits refer to the subset type of the LS member at the 1981 Census and the second two to the subset type of the LS member at the 1991 Census.

NOTE: 1981 and 1991 Tracing Histroy codes are held on the LS members Core Record 11 as two, two digit variables, TRACE81 and TRACE91. It is up to users to create the positional codes by combining the variables into a four digit code.

Although there are five hundred possible combinations from the THI codes between 1971 and 1991, in reality the total number of combinations generated for the full set of THIs is one hundred and sixteen. Among these are a number of codes ending in '88' which is a bucket code for the second decade. The presence of code 88 indicates a situation where an embarkation was known to have occurred in the first decade, but the LS member was subsequently found at the 1991 Census with no re-entry record. These codes are not included here as they were created purely for checking purposes. The remaining one hundred and twelve codes are listed on the following sheets.

1981 TRACING HISTORY VALUES.

Codes 00-09 relate to LS members present in the 1981 Census. Attempts to match and trace these persons were made.

Codes 10-17 relate to LS members not found in the 1981 Census link, although they were already in the LS at that time. Attempts were made to find out what happened to these people.

Codes 97 and 98 were assigned at the 1991 Census link. Codes 00-17 were assigned at the 1981 Census link.
