MINIMAL HOUSEHOLD UNITS (MHU)

1. CLASSIFICATIONS

For the purpose of an MHU a dependent child is a child in a family aged under 15 or 15-18 in full-time education.

1.1. The MHU type (MHUTYP7, MHUTYP8)

TYPE 0	person in a communal establishment
TYPE 1	non-married individuals (single, widowed, separated and divorced)
TYPE 2	one-parent families with dependent children
TYPE 3	married couples with no dependent children
TYPE 4	married couples with dependent children
TYPE 5	visitor in a private household
TYPE 6	visitor in a communal establishment

2	lone mother in MHU Type 2
3	lone father in MHU Type 2

2.1 If

private/communal indicator = communal establishment (PERTYPE = 2)

then MHU = TYPE 0

2.2 If

usual address indicator = elsewhere (URESIND = 2.4)

then MHU = TYPE 5

2.3 If

family number = not in a family (FANUM = 6)

then MHU = TYPE 1

2.4 If

family type of LS member's family = one parent family (FFHTYPE = 2 or 3)
AND number and age combination of dependent children (aged under 19) in LS member's family = no dependent children aged under 19 (LSFDCAC0 = 01)

then MHU = TYPE 1

2.5 If

the position of LS member in household = head of one-parent family (LSPERIND = C, D, E, F)
AND number and age combination of dependent children (aged under 19) in LS member's family = one or more dependent children aged under 19 (LSFDCAC0 = 02-44)

then MHU = TYPE 2

2.6 If

family type of LS member's family = one-parent family (FFHTYPE = 2 or 3)
AND dependent child indicator = person usually resident in a household who is a dependent child (DEPCHN = 1)
AND age = under 19 (AGE8 = 0 to 18)

then MHU = TYPE 2

2.7 If

family type of LS member's family = one-parent family (FFHTYPE = 2 or 3)
AND dependent child indicator = person usually resident in a household who is a dependent child (DEPCHN = 1)
AND age = 19 or over (AGE8 = 19+)

then MHU = TYPE 1

2.8 If

position of LS member in household = child in a one-parent family (LSPERIND = L,M,O,P)
AND dependent child indicator = person usually resident in a household who is not a dependent child (DEPCHN = 2)

then MHU = TYPE 1

2.9 If

family type of LS member's family = married couple family (FFHTYPE = 1)
AND number and age combination of dependent children (aged under 19) in LS member's family = no dependent children aged under 19 (LSFDCAC0 = 01)
AND marital status = married or remarried (MARST = 2 or 3)

then MHU = TYPE 3

2.10 If

family type of LS member's family = married couple family (FFHYTPE = 1)
AND number and age combination of dependent children (aged under 19) in LS member's family = one or more dependent children aged under 19 (LSFDCAC0 = 02-44)
AND marital status = married or remarried (MARST = 2 or 3)

then MHU = TYPE 4

2.11 If

family type of LS member's family = married couple family (FFHYTPE = 1)
AND dependent child indicator = person usually resident in a household who is a dependent child (DEPCHN = 1)
AND age = under 19 (AGE8 = 0 to 18)

then MHU = TYPE 4

2.12 If

family type of LS member's family = married couple family (FFHYTPE = 1)
