Teaching INST2002 Programming 2

Teaching INSTG018 Introduction to Programming and Database Querying

Departmental Undergraduate Coordinator
This role is being permanently reassigned to Antonis Bikakis from the beginning of the 2012/13 session onwards. Some specific tasks:
- Find lab demonstrators / coursework markers for INST1002 and INST2002 at the start of the academic year.
- Support the HoD in finding sessional teachers for various undergraduate modules (currently INST1003, INST2001, INST2005).
- Maintain departmental web pages relating to undergraduate teaching, e.g https://www.ucl.ac.uk/infostudies/ucl-only/teaching/undergraduate/.
- Oversee sessional teachers for DIS undergraduate modules (in collaboration with DA and HoD).
- Oversee the running of January programming examinations.
- Act as point of contact for matters relating to IMB students and the Department of Management Studies and Innovation.
- Act as point of contact for matters relating to DIS's contributions to the the BASc degree programme.
- Act as Chair of the DIS Undergraduate Exam Board.
- Attend MSI Departmental Teaching Committee meetings.
- Attend IMB Staff/Student Consultative Committee meetings.
- Attend IMB Steering Group meetings.
- Explore the possibility of attending Engineering Faculty Teaching Committee meetings (?).
- Generally champion the adequate resourcing of DIS undergraduate modules (e.g. in terms of teaching staff, IT resources and teaching space).
Maintenance of Departmental Database and Associated IT Infrastructure
This work is being permanently reassigned to Oliver Duke-Williams from the beginning of the 2012/13 session onwards. Some specific tasks:
- Regular (currently weekly) backups of the various databases.
- Clean up staff, student and module data in uczcw3d_students ready for new academic year (in collaboration with admin staff).
- In collaboration with admin staff, develop strategies for keeping data up-to-date (in particular data about modules, students and staff).
- Transfer, maintain and develop web interfaces to the MySQL database, currently at www.ucl.ac.uk/infostudies/ucl-only/admin/student-lists-and-photos/, www.ucl.ac.uk/infostudies/ucl-staff/admin/student-lists-and-photos/, www.ucl.ac.uk/infostudies/ucl-staff/email-lists/, www.ucl.ac.uk/infostudies/ucl-staff/departmental-database/, www.ucl.ac.uk/infostudies/infostudies-staff/staff-database/, www.ucl.ac.uk/infostudies/infostudies-staff/modules-database/, www.ucl.ac.uk/infostudies/infostudies-staff/programmes-database/.
- Remind/encourage staff to update their own data and subscribe themselves onto the appropriate staff and student email lists, using the facility at www.ucl.ac.uk/infostudies/infostudies-staff/staff-database/ or its successor (particularly at the start of the academic year).
- Maintain and develop the departmental (database generated) email lists, currently detailed at www.ucl.ac.uk/infostudies/ucl-staff/admin/student-lists-and-photos/DISemailLists.php and www.ucl.ac.uk/infostudies/ucl-staff/admin/DISstaffEmailLists.php.
- Explain departmental IT, email and database functionality to new staff, and create the necessary database entries, web pages and interfaces.
- Look after the various departmental web and role accounts (uczcw3a, uczcw3d, uczccdh, zczcz01-zczcz25). In particular monitor the email for uczcw3a and zczcz01 for "change password" messages, as a prompt to change the passwords for all accounts.
- Maintain the www.imb.ucl.ac.uk web server.
- Maintain departmental awareness of IT-related issues, initiatives, systems and changes at UCL.
Departmental Tutor to Taught Graduates
Andy Dawson will act in this role for the first term of the 2012/13 session. This role is officially described at www.ucl.ac.uk/academic-manual/part-5/graduate-tutors. There is further guidance from the A & H Faculty at www.ucl.ac.uk/ah-shs-office/dept_tutors, and a list of resources for student support and guidance at www.ucl.ac.uk/academic-manual/part-5. Here is a non-exhaustive list of specific tasks for Term 1:
- Deliver the Induction Week (Day 1) Departmental Tutor's welcome speech (see links in left-hand column of www.ucl.ac.uk/infostudies/rob-miller/dept-tutor-admin/).
- Oversee the assignment of personal tutors within the department, ensure that these are recorded in the departmental student database, and ensure that personal tutors are aware of the departmental policies and procedures regarding personal tutor appointments.
- Monitor the frequency of personal tutor appointments via the web interface to the departmental database, and periodically report on this to DIS staff.
- Oversee the selection/election of student representatives, and ensure that these are recorded in the departmental student database and visible to students via the departmental intranet.
- Update and maintain the general sections (i.e. Part 1) of the Departmental Student Handbook.
- Organise and chair the Term 1 Departmental Staff/Student Consultative Committee meeting (24 October).
- Attend FIGS meetings (dates to be announced).
- Attend Departmental Management Committee meetings (17 October).
- Attend Faculty-wide Departmental Tutors meetings (10 October).
Director of Studies (i.e. Chair of Departmental Teaching Committee)
