Jon Newbury

Teaching Fellow, MA in Publishing

Jon Newbury photo

As a member of the Centre for Publishing, I lead teaching for modules INSTGO68: Publishing Skills and INSTGO71: Academic and Journals and lecture across various topics in publishing, most typically scholarly communication, business and relationship management, content development, publication ethics and editorial skills. I currently act as Admissions Tutor and welcome queries from prospective MA in Publishing students considering application for the 2018/2019 academic year.

I have research interests primarily in the history of academic publishing and all aspects of open access, as well as process and project management, digital technology, analytics, rights management and research methods. From a teaching perspective I am concerned with diversity, ethics, interdisciplinary approaches to publishing (particularly interactive media) and professional skills training.

My industry experience rests largely within academic publishing where I have overseen the publication of journals, monographs and digital resources - alongside stints in trade and professional publishing. In addition, I work with the School of Advanced Study, University of London (SAS) and Institute of Historical Research on the development of open access monograph programmes and the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) to deliver professional publishing training.

I hold a joint honours undergraduate degree in English and History, BA (Wales), and a masters degree in Publishing, MA (UCL), retaining a latent interest in modes of storytelling in contemporary writing as well as early modern and postcolonial studies.
