Vanda Broughton

I am Professor of Library & Information Studies in the Department of Information Studies at University College London (UCL), and Programme Director for the MA in Library and Information Studies Programme.

I teach primarily on that programme, delivering the core course,
Cataloguing and Classification 1, and the optional module Cataloguing
and Classification 2. I am the author of two standard works in the
field, Essential classification and Essential thesaurus construction, which has recently been translated into Italian; a third title, Essential Library of Congress Subject Headings was published in 2012.

I am also Graduate Research Tutor in the Department, responsible for the administration and pastoral care of research students, and Co-Director of the KOARG Research Group.

My personal research interests are centred on faceted classification and its application, particularly in digital environments. The FATKS project
investigated the way in which faceted classification data can be
maintained and handled in a relational database format. More recent
work has concentrated on the structuring and mark-up of BC2
terminologies to support a thesaurus format, and on the way in which
faceted structures can be expressed through web representation
languages. I have also undertaken an investigation of systems for
automatic metadata generation. I am happy to consider expressions of interest in PhD study in any of the above areas.

I am Editor of the Bliss Bibliographic Classification 2nd edition and Associate Editor of the Universal Decimal Classification. Much of my ongoing research is into the development of faceted terminologies for various subject domains in both of these schemes. I am Chair of the UK Chapter of the International Society for Knowledge Organization, and Chair of the Bliss Classification Association. I was a member of the UK Classification Research Group, and also served on the Committee of the Classification section of IFLA and Committee IDT/3 of the British Standards Institution. I am a member of the Cataloguing and Indexing Group, and the Information Services Group of CILIP.
