Caroline Davis

I am an Associate Professor in Publishing in the Department of Information Studies at University College London (UCL), where I teach on the MA in Publishing. I am also joint Departmental Graduate Tutor.

My research interests are publishing history and book culture, specialising in colonial and postcolonial publishing histories. This is the subject of my monograph Creating Postcolonial Publishing: African Writers and British Publishers (Palgrave 2013) and my short monograph African Literature and the CIA: Networks of Authorship and Publishing (Cambridge University Press, 2020). I am the co-editor of Print Culture in Southern Africa (Routledge, 2021) and The Book in Africa: Critical Debates (Palgrave, 2015), and editor of Print Cultures: A Reader in Theory and Practice (Macmillan, 2019). I currently hold an AHRC fellowship (2020-22), entitled ‘Book Empires: British Publishing in Africa 1900-1965’.

I am currently editor of the Edinburgh Companion to Colonial Periodicals with David Finkelstein and David Johnson, which is due for publication in 2023, and I am also responsible for the ‘Colonial and Postcolonial Publishing’ strand of the the Cambridge University Press Elements in Book and Publishing Culture series, edited by Professor Samantha Rayner.

Before coming to UCL in September 2021, I was a Senior Lecturer at Oxford Brookes University and prior to that worked at Oxford University in humanities computing and at Oxford University Press in digital publishing.

I am very interested in proposals from potential PhD students wishing to undertake postgraduate studies in Publishing Studies at UCL. Please email me if you would like to discuss any research proposals before application.
