Kidney Fibrosis

Photo Jill Norman

Jill Norman is a Reader in Nephrology at UCL. Her main research activities focus on investigating the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of progressive fibrosis of the kidney, which is the cardinal feature of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Specific areas of investigation include the mechanisms of hypoxic regulation of expression of fibrogenic genes; the control of fibroblast to myofibroblast differentiation; and, the role of fibroblast-endothelial cell and fibroblast-epithelial cell interactions in the pathogenesis of fibrosis.

After receiving her PhD from Imperial Cancer Research Fund/University of London, she was awarded an ICRF travel fellowship for post-doctoral studies at the University of Colorado in Denver and the University of California, San Francisco.  After further post-doctoral studies at the University of Virginia, she was appointed to a faculty position in the Division of Nephrology at the University of California, Los Angeles. She subsequently returned to the UK to take up a position in the Division of Medicine at UCL.
