Dr Mark McPhail (King's College London) will be speaking at the UCL Institute of Immunity and Transplantation Seminar Series on Thursday 1 April.

About the speaker

Dr Mark McPhail is a Senior Lecturer and Consultant in Liver Critical Care and Hepatology in the Institute of Liver Studies, King's College London and Department of Hepatology at Imperial College. His main research interests are in outcome prediction, metabolism and immunity in liver failure syndromes. He is also working on novel methods to diagnose and monitor hepatic encephalopathy and sepsis. He also holds a PhD in Molecular Physics from the University of Strathclyde. During his doctorate, he collaborated with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena and the University of Bologna on modelling rotation and vibration of atmospheric molecules involved in ozone depletion and global warming.

While retraining in medicine following his PhD he maintained an interest in teaching physics as an Associate Lecturer with the Open University. He continues to develop an interest in statistics and has published widely using multivariate methods. His present focus is on using metabolic profiling to improve prognostication and find novel pathways for metabolic modulation of innate immune responses through the action of lipids on CD14+ monocytes in patients with acute and acute-on-chronic liver failure.
