The rationale for INEQ-CITIES is clear; growing health inequality within Europe demands greater knowledge and well-informed policy. The central aim of INEQ-CITIES was to identify socio-economic inequalities in health and mortality in Europe and to examine urban health policies developed to tackle such inequalities in health. To achieve these aims, a methodological approach was applied to study cross-sectional ecological mortality data from 16 European cities.
In order to conduct this research systematically throughout Europe's urban hubs, INEQ-CITIES required collaboration between public health and research institutions from 18 different cities in 14 countries across the European continent. The cities included in the study are shown on the map. Each institution was involved in one or more of the eight Work Packages that instructed the coordination, data collection, analysis, recommendations and dissemination of the INEQ-CITIES Project.
