The IIT's PhD students and postdoctoral research fellows recently had the opportunity to attend the International School on Advanced Immunology in Osaka, Japan.

Osaka Immunology School
"My experience at the International School on Advanced Immunology was truly inspiring and enriching. I loved the close-knit, interactive atmosphere that fostered in-depth discussions on a broad range of immunology research topics. Every person attending the school presented their research and all attendees were engaged and enthusiastic about each other’s work. The environment was incredibly friendly and supportive, fostering the sharing of ideas and information. There was ample time to delve into scientific discussions, socialise, and connect with both peers and senior PIs, who were always approachable for sharing insights and sparking collaborative ideas. This emphasis on open dialogue between senior researchers and younger academics was particularly helpful. The conference was also exceptionally well-organized, with delicious food and outstanding hospitality in a beautiful setting that added to the experience. The trip to Himeji Castle was a great way to break up the week and learn about Japanese history and architecture. The lab tours offered a glimpse into the cutting-edge research being conducted at Osaka University and IFReC. Overall, I couldn’t think of anything I’d change—it was truly an unforgettable experience which I would highly recommend." - Lucy Cooper, Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Osaka Immunology School

Attending the International Immunology School in Osaka was inspirational. The quality of talks from all attending early career researchers was incredible and covered so many research topics, with something to interest everyone in every session. The atmosphere of the school was also very open and friendly. Although the week was intense, it provided so many great opportunities to get to know both fellow ERCs and senior PIs in a more casual setting than most conferences. With such a small group (52 attendees) all staying in the same hotel, everyone was together from breakfast through to post-conference drinks, which really helped foster a sense of togetherness and made it easier to get to know everyone. And of course, the school was held on Awaji island in Japan, which was so incredible. There was a lovely garden with spectacular views over the bay whenever some fresh air was needed during breaks. The excursion to Himeji castle was also a great way to break up the conference and learn some Japanese history. I would fully recommend applying for the next Immunology school. I really enjoyed the experience and think it is a great opportunity to meet some really impressive ERCs and build a world-wide network of friends. - Chloe Rees-Spear, PhD student

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the ImmunoSensation-IFREC International school on Advanced Immunology. The lecturers are world-leaders in their respective fields and, given the relatively small number of attendees, gave ample opportunity to engage and discuss on various scientific topics. Indeed, I was able to talk with one lecturer who worked on a similar subject to my own research. This discussion led to an invitation the following week to give a seminar to his group at the University of Tokyo. This would not have happened without the advanced school: I am therefore incredibly grateful to have created new relationships through this school which will undoubtedly serve me well in my future career. I wholeheartedly recommend applying to the school. - Maximillian Robinson, Research Fellow
