Peter Scheuer Chair in Liver Diseases
Viral Hepatitis, Liver Fibrosis, Vaccines.
Viral Hepatitis caused by the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and Hepatitis B virus (HBV) are major causes of chronic liver disease, which is now the 5th commonest cause of death in the United Kingdom.
Our group studies all aspects of viral hepatitis, spanning basic immunology and its relationship to liver fibrosis (basic science); clinical studies of disease including clinical trials of treatment and diagnosis (clinical trials); the investigation of strategies for improving the diagnosis and clinical management of viral hepatitis (applied health services research); and studies of disease prevalence and incidence (epidemiology).
In addition we have a very active programme in vaccine research, employing a novel virus like particle platform for vaccine development.
We utilise a range of research methods and techniques. Our work is undertaken in close collaboration with other groups at UCL, other universities, the NHS and industry partners.
I am Clinical Lead for Viral Hepatitis at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and UCLH NHS Foundation Trust.
Our clinical team of 10 consultants and 5 clinical nurse specialists cares for several thousand patients with chronic viral hepatitis, delivering 6,750 consultations per year. The team includes hepatologists, infectious disease specialists and virologists.
Our service is a designated NHSE Viral Hepatitis Treatment Centre, working in close conjunction with Barts Health treating over 100 patients with advanced hepatitis C in 2014.
We lead and participate in a large number of clinical studies. These include trials of new clinical entities, offering patients of the clinic the opportunity of early access to new drugs.
Our research is also aiming to improve the detection and stratification of chronic liver disease, working in close collaboration with community based services including general practitioners.
