The Michael Marmot MSc Studentship in Social Epidemiology 

The MSc Health and Society: Social Epidemiology is offering a one-year studentship for full-time students undertaking the MSc in Health and Society: Social Epidemiology programme. 

The award will commence in September 2018 and the studentship will consist of £2,500 towards tuition fees. The recipient will be expected to secure the remaining part of their tuition fees and to cover their living costs.

Eligibility requirements

Candidates can originate from any country however they must be intending to enrol on the MSc in Health and Society: Social Epidemiology programme on a full time basis; and by the studentship application deadline, they must have received an unconditional offer of admission for this programme. Applicants with a conditional offer can apply for the studentship but must receive an unconditional offer by 5pm on Friday 24th August 2018 to be eligible for the Studentship. 

Selection criteria

Award of the studentship will be made on the basis of experience, qualifications and future academic potential, which will be assessed by an applicants curriculum vitae and personal statement. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to write a 2000-word essay on a pre-defined public health topic. The studentship will be awarded upon the recommendation of an academic selection panel chaired by Professor Sir Michael Marmot.

Value and duration

The value of the award is £2,500. Awards are tenable for one year of full-time study only, for the session 2018/19.

Terms and conditions of the award

  • The studentship may be held alongside other scholarships, studentships, awards or bursaries.
  • The studentship cannot be transferred to another institution, nor deferred to a later year.
  • The studentship payments will only be made if the recipient is fully enrolled in the above mentioned MSc programme at UCL.
  • All awards are subject to the provisions of the General Regulations for Scholarships, Awards, Bursaries, Prizes and medals.

Application procedure:

Eligible candidates for the Michael Marmot UCL Studentship in Social Epidemiology must submit a copy of their UCL offer, CV and supporting statement to Sophie Skinner (eph.healthsociety@ucl.ac.uk).

Studentship Application deadline:

The deadline for submissions is 5pm on Friday 24th August 2018. Applications will be reviewed by the academic selection panel and shortlisted candidates will be given a topic for the essay.

Important notes

Studentship applicants without an admissions offer at the time of the studentship deadline will be excluded from the application process. It is for this reason that we recommend you apply for admission as early as possible.

Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Your Studentship application must be complete in order to be valid. We will not inform you whether your application has been received or whether it is complete, nor contact you for missing documents. Incomplete applications are invalid and will not be processed.

Notification of results

Only shortlisted candidates will be notified. Those shortlisted will be notified by email not later than 30th August 2018. It is expected that the whole selection process will be completed by the 7th Sep 2018.  

Successful and reserve candidates will be notified either in writing or by email thereafter.
