Bill Marshall Fellowships

Background

The Bill Marshall Memorial Fund was created in memory of Dr William Courtney Marshall (1929-1983), a native Australian trained at Sydney University who held junior appointments in Sydney hospitals before coming to London in 1958. He was briefly attached to Queen Charlotte's Maternity Hospital before his appointment to Great Ormond Street Hospital, where he remained for the rest of his working life.

As a Consultant and Senior Lecturer, he built up an international reputation as a unique clinician and teacher (most particularly in South East Asia), with special interest in infectious diseases and infections in children, their causation and prevention by immunization and other means. His interests also extended to other areas such as renal and respiratory disorders, and malignant disease such as leukaemias and immunodeficiency states.

Postgraduate Fellowships

Each year since Bill Marshall's death, the Trustees of the Memorial Fund have awarded one or two Visiting fellows scheme for periods of three months. They are intended for intended for junior doctors in training for whom a period of research would be an appropriate next step in their career who wish to visit Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust and the Institute of Child Health to gain further experience at one of the specialist departments. Priority is given to applicants from South East Asia who have not previously had the opportunity of studying in the UK at postgraduate level. High quality candidates from other countries can be considered.

The awards are each in the region of £5,000 which provides enough funding for subsistence, single person accommodation, return air travel to the UK , and travel within the UK for meetings/visits and registration fees for such meetings. (It should be noted in this respect that the single person accommodation provided is usually in a hall of residence, though no particular accommodation can be guaranteed. Fellows who wish to bring their families would have to be responsible for finding and funding their own accommodation, bearing in mind that accommodation in central London is very expensive).

Please note that a salary is not provided and it is expected that the Fellow's own employing authority would continue to pay this. Note also that any accompanying family members would need to be self-financed.

The Fellow may attend all the clinical and academic functions of the Unit to which they are attached, with Observer status only. It should be noted that clinical responsibilities cannot be given. It may also be possible for Fellows to attend a limited number of short specialist courses at the Institute of Child Health during their stay, subject to the approval of the Director of the Visiting Fellows programme.  Please note that Fellows who wish to carry out their Fellowship within the Neurology Department will be charged a tuition fee.  Further details on this can be obtained by contacting a member of staff within the Postgraduate Medical Education Department (PGME), Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Dates of Fellowship

Fellowships normally run from 1 April to 30 June each year. Although there can be some flexibility in the dates, it is strongly advised that Fellows aim to arrive as close as possible to this start date.

It should also be noted that there may be difficulties in providing accommodation if any other dates are requested.

Application procedure

  • All candidates must be nominated by a senior colleague (i.e. Head of Department or Unit) who knows them well at their current place of employment.
  • Applications must be submitted as a single document, either in Word or PDF format, and should be sent by email to ICH.BMF@ucl.ac.uk.
  • Applications must include the following:

    • A completed Nomination Form (with electronic signatures) which should include the Candidate's Statement indicating their experience and career intentions; and
    • A short Curriculum Vitae. This should include full details of any experience in the speciality for which you are applying, and a complete listing of any publications.
    • Two professional references (one of these must be from the candidate's Head of Department) which should be submitted separately by your referees to ICH.BMF@ucl.ac.uk.

It is important that applicants provide all of the information set out above as incomplete or late applications cannot be considered.

Applications for Fellowships and references should be made to arrive no later than 15 October each year (for Fellowships commencing the following April). Applications are considered in November and the successful applicants will be contacted by the end of the year.
