Andy Valdar visiting professor at UCL and president of FITCE Europe recently opened the 57th FITCE Congress at which Silvia Rossi, ICCS member, and Prof Valdar both presented.

The Congress entitled 'Delivery and Consumption of Digital Media' was organised for the Federation of Telecommunications Engineers of the European Union (FITCE) and held at the University of Salford’s site in MediacityUK.

The backdrop to discussions was focused on the significant growth in Subscription Video on Demand services and increased data volumes being observed on mobile networks due to live and catch-up video content.

Professor Valdar provided an overview of Important Developments in Telecommunications Network Architecture, likening architectural models to pasta dishes and explaining the importance of architectural developments such as virtual network slicing.

Silvia Rossi was supported by the Institute of Communications and Connected Systems (ICCS) to attend. She gave a well-received presentation of her work into the optimisation of immersive video content streaming.

The Congress, which has been co-organised by Prof Valdar, and Prof Nigel Linge of the University of Salford, was hailed a success, with a strong attendance from members of both the media and telecoms communities. There were 4 technical sessions with 15 papers presented and 7 keynote speeches along with an absorbing technical visit to dock10  television studios on the Media City campus.

Reflecting on the Congress Prof Valdar said:

“It was gratifying that the concept of mixing the media and telecoms industry seems to have been a successful way to understand the effect of video content on future networks, especially 5G.  There was clearly a buzz going on as delegates mixed, which culminated in an enjoyable gala dinnerIt was gratifying that the concept of mixing the media and telecoms industry seems to have been a successful way to understand the effect of video content on future networks, especially 5G.  There was clearly a buzz going on as delegates mixed, which culminated in an enjoyable gala dinner
