5G – Looking Beyond the Smartphone

5G is the first cellular communication standards that has been designed from the outset to deliver wireless connectivity to a wide range of devices and support a multitude of new and different use cases.

Unlike 4G LTE , 5G doesn’t only focus on connecting people but goes beyond that to connect everyone and everything and expanding into new use cases such massive IoT, mission critical communication and AR/VR.
New technical solutions have been required to deliver the high throughput, very high reliability and ultra-low latency that these new use cases requires.

Mediatek is driving the 5G innovation and is playing a major role in defining the 5G specification and is at the forefront of powering 5G with its advanced 5G chipsets and modem technology.

In this talk, we will present an overview of these new 5G use cases beyond mobile broadband including AR/VR, Cloud gaming, V2X , Non-Terrestrial Network, URLLC /IIoT and NR-Light and will highlight some of the key technical challenges that had to be solved.

About the ICCS online seminar series

The ICCS seminar series is designed to bring together members of our community who are currently away from our home in Bloomsbury and distributed across the world. The Seminars are being curated to provide academic exploration and inspiration, offering insights into a range of topics surrounding communications and connected systems. Topics will either explore subjects close to the work of our academics or introduce wider concepts from experts in the global academic and industrial community.

If you wish to suggest a future topic or speaker please use the link below, speakers could be from academia, industry, within ICCS/UCL or from further a field.

Format

The seminar will begin with a presentation aimed at a technical audience, but at a level that will be accessible to those from a range of engineering disciplines. Speakers have been asked to end their presentations with a technical challenge or delving deeper into the content to engage those more invested in the topic.

The seminar series is designed to offer a compact exploration of ranging topics and is therefore short in format. The presentation will run for 15 - 30 minutes, followed by 15 minutes of questions.

About the Speaker

Cyril Valadon

Technical Director at MediaTek

Cyril is Technical Director with MediaTek in Cambourne where he is leading the Core Technology Division in the wireless business unit. He completed his PhD at the University of Surrey where he was looking at the use of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) techniques for multimedia satellite communication systems (in the heady days of Globalstar, Iridium, ICO, …). He has since spent 20 years in the semiconductor industry standardizing, architecting and developing wireless chipsets for numerous cellular communication standards. His team is currently working on a variety of development projects for 5G/NR solutions and he is personally very keen in exploring opportunities to apply these solutions for different applications.
