Biography
Andrea Piccione obtained his BSc and MSc in Energy and Nuclear Engineering from the University of Rome "Tor Vergata", graduating with summa cum laude. Whilst studying in Rome, he completed several modules in energy conversion, efficiency and management, particularly focused on renewable energy sources and innovative power plants. As part of his master's project he spent 5 months at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (Oxfordshire) developing an algorithm to automatically track high-density plasma structures in images taken with a fast-camera mounted on fusion energy devices. He joined the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at UCL in 2018, where he is currently working towards a PhD in visual data analysis using deep learning methods under the supervision of Prof. Yiannis Andreopoulos.
His research goal is to develop robust, reliable and, possibly, real-time algorithms to prevent disruptive events in relevant fusion energy devices.
