Established in 2016 through the Provost’s Strategic Fund, the UCL Humanitarian Institute is hosted within UCL Risk & Disaster Reduction, in collaboration with a wide range of UCL faculties, departments, and institutes.
The institute serves as a hub for interdisciplinary research, education, and public engagement, addressing the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. From disaster risk reduction, conflict, and forced migration to climate change, gender, violences, and social justice, our work bridges academic excellence with real-world impact.
We bring together researchers, practitioners, and communities to develop innovative, inclusive, and effective responses to crises, reflecting UCL’s commitment to global citizenship and social equity.
Our vision is to create a world where humanitarian action is grounded in evidence, guided by ethics, and led in partnership with affected communities.
Our mission is to:
Advance interdisciplinary research, teaching, and public engagement on humanitarian issues.
Build capacity through education, training, and exchange.
Inform policy and practice with rigorous, co-produced knowledge.
Engage ethically with communities, governments, organisations, and ourselves.
