Regrading process for Teaching Fellow review

The HR Business Partners will be writing to HoD’s in each Faculty with a list of their Teaching Fellows. The Heads of Departments are required to review all Grade 7 Teaching Fellows in their department using the relevant criteria held in the Academic Careers Framework to determine who meets the criteria for promotion to Grade 8 Lecturer (Teaching) and Grade 8 Teaching Fellow Job Descriptions.

The Head of Department should make every effort to meet with newly appointed or existing Teaching Fellows where they are not familiar with their duties and responsibilities.

The materials to be provided by Teaching Fellows to the Head of Department are listed below:

  • A Curriculum Vitae which must contain at least the required elements specified in the Curriculum Vitae template

  • A brief self-assessment indicating how the Teaching Fellow's activity matches the criteria for promotion contained within the academic career framework. This should be no longer than one side of A4; a detailed description is not required in this statement, but the Teaching Fellow may wish to indicate the impact of their work and their future direction.

Should the Head of Department have any Grade 7 Teaching Fellows that do not meet the criteria for promotion to Grade 8, Head of Department are required to provide clear feedback outlining areas for development and the support that will be given to achieve promotion in the short – medium term.

Appeals

Teaching Fellows who are unsuccessful in achieving promotion to Grade 8 will have the right to appeal against the decision.

Appeals must be submitted in writing to the Dean, no later than five working days after receipt of the decision in writing. The outcome will stand unless or until it is modified as a result of the appeal.

This process mirrors our existing process of promotion for Research and Teaching staff moving from Grade 7 to Grade 8.

Spinal points

Grade 7 Teaching Fellows who meet the promotion criteria will be appointed to the first spine point of the Grade 8 salary scale unless they are already in the contribution points. If this is the case then they will move to the next spine point of the Grade 8 scale.
